Why I Started Designs by MTK: Celebrating and Empowering Black Women

As a Black woman navigating both corporate America and entrepreneurship, I’ve witnessed firsthand the disrespect and lack of appreciation Black women often face. We are the backbone of our communities and trailblazers in our workplaces, yet our contributions are frequently minimized or overlooked. From the boardroom to the block, Black women are expected to show up, show out, and do so with grace, even when the world around us is anything but gracious.

Starting Designs by MTK (DBMTK) was my way of pushing back against the narrative that we should be content with crumbs when we deserve the whole feast. DBMTK is more than a brand—it’s a movement. It’s a reminder to every Black woman that you are powerful, beautiful, and deserving of every good thing. We celebrate Black women in all shades, shapes, and sizes because we are not a monolith. Our diversity is our strength, and our stories deserve to be told, seen, and honored.

The truth is, “Black Girl Magic” is not just a cool, catchy phrase. It is our reality. It’s what we embody every single day. From the strength of our ancestors in the Civil Rights Movement to the undeniable power of our voices in the most recent election, where 92% of Black women voted for Vice President Kamala Harris, we are always on the front lines of change. We are leaders, innovators, and culture shifters, and our magic is real.

But it’s not enough to simply say it—we have to live it. That’s why DBMTK exists: to encourage Black women to build our own tables and stop waiting for others to give us a seat at theirs. Our designs are bold, unapologetic, and created with the intention of making you feel seen and celebrated. Whether you are rocking one of our tees, sharing our story, or building alongside us, you are part of this mission.

Looking ahead, my goals for DBMTK extend far beyond clothing and apparel. I want to generate enough revenue to reinvest in other Black, women-owned businesses. It’s about creating a cycle of support and empowerment that extends well beyond me. I also dream of starting a nonprofit focused on teaching young Black women how to launch businesses and navigate corporate America as their authentic selves. It’s about planting seeds that will grow into future generations of fearless Black women who know their worth and demand nothing less.

When you support Designs by MTK, you’re not just buying a product—you’re joining a movement. You are saying yes to a brand that sees you, values you, and celebrates you. Together, we can shift the narrative, create new opportunities, and continue to shine our Black Girl Magic into every corner of the world.

Let’s keep building, shining, and thriving—together.

With love & power,
