The Social Media Struggle: Marketing as a Black, Working Mompreneur

Running a small, Black-owned business in today’s digital world means one thing—social media is essential. Platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook aren’t just for keeping up with trends; they are powerful tools that drive traffic to our websites, increase orders, and grow our brands. But let’s be real—who has the time to post consistently when juggling a 9-5, household responsibilities, basketball practice, and actually filling orders?

As a Black working mother and entrepreneur, I know firsthand how overwhelming it can be. I understand that social media can take my business to the next level, but between managing my home, supporting my family, and handling the day-to-day operations of my brand, creating content sometimes takes a backseat. Still, I know consistency is key, and I’m working on finding ways to make it easier—because, honestly, I’m struggling!

So, for all the other working women who are trying to balance it all while keeping their business visible online, here are some strategies to help stay consistent with posting:

1. Batch Create Content

Instead of scrambling to post something every day, set aside time once a week (or even once a month) to create multiple pieces of content at once. Take pictures, record videos, and write captions in one sitting so you always have something ready to go.

2. Use Scheduling Tools

Apps like Planoly, Later, or Meta Business Suite allow you to schedule posts in advance. Spend one evening scheduling content for the week so you can focus on everything else without worrying about what to post each day.

3. Repurpose Content

One video can become a Reel, a TikTok, and a Facebook post. A single blog post can be turned into multiple social media captions. Don’t stress about creating something new every time—just remix what you already have.

4. Set Realistic Goals

In theory, posting three times a day sounds great, but is it realistic for a working mom? Probably not. Instead, commit to a schedule that works for you—maybe three times a week instead of daily. Consistency matters more than frequency.

5. Lean on Templates & Trends

Canva’s ready-made social media templates and trending audio can boost engagement with minimal effort. Instead of starting from scratch, you can save time by using what’s already out there.

6. Involve Your Kids (If Possible)

If your business is family-friendly, let your kids help! Cooper loves helping in the studio (especially if he gets paid at the end of it), and sometimes that makes for great behind-the-scenes content. Plus, it turns work into bonding time.

7. Give Yourself Grace

At the end of the day, we are doing the best we can. Some weeks will be better than others, and that’s okay. The goal is progress, not perfection.

So, if you’re struggling to keep up with social media while running a business and a household—same, sis, same, but together, we can find ways to make it work without burning ourselves out. Now, if you see me slacking on my own advice, just know I’m a work in progress, too!
